Riverside Palm - W4 Word Guess Game
W4 was originally taugh to me by a substitute teacher while I was in High School in
Ashlans, KY. I have no idea where he came upon this wonderful game or even his name.
While at College (Morehead State University) I would play this game with several of my
friends and have taught it to dozens of people over the years.
W4 - Rules:
- Each player selects a secret word from the dictionary. The word must be four (4)
letters long and must not contain the same letter more than once. (Good Words: word,
like, once, able...) (Bad Words: cook, book, babe...)
- Play alternates between the players guessing the other players word.
- After a guess is made a clue is given back to the guessing player of the number of
letters in common with the guess and the secret word. (Secert Word: abut Guess: east
Clue: 0, Guess: able Clue: 2, Guess: tuba Clue: 4).
- Play stops when the first secret word is guessed. Both players will then confirm what
their secret word had been.
W4 - Hints:
- When you are playing W4 it is often helpful to have a piece of paper with the alphabet
and the guesses you have made. Beside the guesses I write the number of letters in
common with my opponent's word.
- If you recieve a clue of zero (0) I then scratch the letters in the word from the
alphabet and any other guesses I have made. Eventually you should be able to
eliminate a large portion of the dictionary.
- As you eliminate letters from the alphabet you should also eliminate letters from your
guesses. Eventually you will be left with the letters that you know for sure are in
the other player's word.

|
| This is the first step in playing the game. You select
who will go first and enter your secret word. The system will validate the word
against the dictionary. In the example screen the human player is going first with
the secret word 'word'. They are playing against the computer "Hard"
strategy. |
Player One entered the word 'what' and recieved the clue of
zero (0) back from the computer player. |
Player Two just won the game on the ninth round. You
can see both of the secret words. |
